What do feelings have to do with painting and drawing?

Our society is shaped by the belief that the mind, the head, is the most important thing.

Only your feelings can tell you the truth about whether something is right or wrong FOR YOU. For example, if you are thinking about taking a job that your mind is pushing you towards because it promises a lot of money and promotion, you can really only decide if you listen to your feelings.

 

Your gut feeling can clearly signal YES or NO – but your mind will always have clever arguments that override your true gut feeling if you do not take your feelings seriously.


It takes courage to trust your feelings and your heart. But trusting your feelings is something that has to be relearned and practised. This is only possible when your head is free of the many concepts and programmes that prevent you from feeling.

Painting and the brain – we are what we remember

Our brain is plastic. This means that our memories do not remain stable; they are constantly being overwritten by new impressions. The brain is influenced by painted images, allowing it to calm down and develop new, constructive behaviour.



Memories are images

Of all our senses, which shape our memories, visual impressions are the strongest.

Drawing and painting create new images in a structured way, overwriting disturbing images in the brain.


The belief that you cannot draw and paint has been instilled in you throughout your life. As adults, we must relearn to trust our primal instincts and simply draw and paint, following a spontaneous idea or concern that is currently on our minds.

If we remain stuck in old grudges or past hurts and suffering – unable to let go of them – then these memories and images prevent us from moving forward in life with a light heart.

Just as we repeatedly clean our flat or house, removing dust and dirt, we should do the same with ourselves.


However, if we have accumulated mental and emotional ‘dirt’ over many years due to ignorance and a lack of professional help, we should not be surprised when problems arise. This can begin with lethargy, listlessness, frustration and constant anger, and lead to anxiety, burnout and depression.


Out of the dullness, in with joy and lightness!

Through art therapy, we can “paint over” old emotional baggage and create new emotional images within ourselves.
